Freeing Up Storage on a Mac

When it comes to a Mac’s performance, the amount of free storage available is crucial.

To find out how much storage your Mac has currently, go to the start menu, which is the Apple icon, then to About This Mac, and to Storage.

Once on the Storage Tab, you can click on the Manage… button to see the list of recommendations Mac has for the best optimization. You will also find the following tools available:

  • Store in iCloud
  • Optimize Storage
  • Empty Trash Automatically
  • Reduce Clutter

When utilizing the iCloud storage drive, it’s recommended the device is updated to the latest OS version. Reducing Clutter works great under the recommended files your device shares. From there, you may delete any large files, photos, videos, or other documents you feel are unnecessary to have. Optimizing Storage will delete any past tv or movie purchases automatically. If you choose the Empty Trash Automatically, anything in the Trash Bin past 30 days will be deleted.

How to Screenshot by Tapping on iPhones

If you have an iPhone, you will want to try this feature out!

I just recently found out about this simple, yet wonderful feature on the iPhone. Screenshots can usually be taken by holding down the power button and the volume button simultaneously. It can be frustrating, however, if you don’t, as if not done properly you will just turn off the screen.

Here’s how you can screenshot by just tapping on your iPhone’s back:
  • Go to Settings
  • Scroll down to Accessibility
  • Under Physical and Motor, click on Touch
  • Scroll to the bottom and click on Back Tap

From there, you will find Double Tap and Triple Tap are your options. If you click on one, you’ll find a list of uses, such as Home Screen, Mute, Siri, among others.

Click on Screenshot.

And there you have it. When you double tap (or triple tap, whichever one you chose), a shot of your screen will appear. Super easy and quick! Be sure to check out the list and see if any of them are worth utilizing with the back taps.

Note: I do have a case on my iPhone 12 Pro Max, and the double tap STILL DOES work. I’m unsure if it will work with all cases.

iOS 15 Announcement

Today begins Apple’s WWDC, streaming live on YouTube. This conference will be announcing a handful of upcoming features and tools for developers, the new iPhone 13, and iOS 15.

The FaceTime app will get an upgrade with Spacial Audio. This allows conversations to be more natural. Also, when in horizontal mode, backgrounds will be blurred, so you are the one in focus.

Another feature in FaceTime will add SharePlay. This can allow those on the video call to listen to music or watch a movie together.

iOS 15 will include new features to Messages. Developers have been working on something called Shared With You. News articles, photos, and music can be shared easily through messages. The shared information will be saved in the appropriate apps for you.

This is just a small part of the bigger iOS picture. Come back later for more information, or go to Apple’s WWDC video on YouTube.

Apple Event Highlight: M1

Today, Apple announced new iMacs and iPads set to be released by mid-May during their Apple Event. These new devices will incorporate Apple’s brand new M1 chip, which will replace Intel’s chip.

Before this, Apple had to involve several chips to do what the new M1 chip can do. This includes memory, security, and processing. But with this new innovative design, the M1 is all around powerful. The graph below, from Apple’s website, shows a 2x faster CPU performance in the M1. Also, the M1 only uses 25% performance of what a PC normally uses. This is mind-blowing!

Source: Apple

“The 8‑core CPU in M1 is by far the highest‑performance CPU we’ve ever built. Designed to crush tasks using the least amount of power, M1 features two types of cores: high performance and high efficiency. So from editing family photos to exporting iMovie videos for the web to managing huge RAW libraries in Lightroom to checking your email, M1 blazes right through it all — without blazing through battery life.”

macOS Update to Fix USB-C Hub Issues

Apple issued an update on macOS to fix a USB-C problem with MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

According to Apple Support, it states, “macOS Big Sur 11.2.2 prevents MacBook Pro (2019 or later) and MacBook Air (2020 or later) models from incurring damage when they are connected to certain third-party, non-compliant powered USB-C hubs and docks.”

Newer MacBooks are seemingly becoming unresponsive when third-party USB-C hubs are connected to the laptop. This particular Big Sur OS update will improve this case.

It’s encouraged to download and install this update to be safe. You can find the the Software Update under System Preferences.

Some MacBook Pros Aren’t Charging

If you have a 2016 or 2017 MacBook Pro, this issue may pertain to you.

Apparently, some MacBooks aren’t charging past 1%, which is quite the dilemma. macOS Big Sur released an update just recently, encouraging all users to install it as a precaution. This one battery-related issue affects a small percentage of users acquiring a 2016 or 2017 MacBook Pro.

Apple Support stated, “A very small number of customers with 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro computers have experienced an issue with the battery not charging past 1%.

The battery health status on these devices will also indicate “Service Recommended.” If the status indicates that your battery is Normal, your battery is not affected by this issue.

Thankfully, if you fall under those experiencing battery issues, Apple says you can contact them. They will verify if your computer is eligible to receive a new battery replacement for free.

The MacBook Pros are listed below:

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)

Special Apple Event November 10

Apple announced recently a special “One more thing” event occurring on November 10th at 10 am PST.

Although there seems to be no information on what it would entail on their Apple Events website, it seems it may be focusing on Apple Silicon Macs.

9to5Mac says on their website, “This November event is expected to focus on the upcoming transition to Apple Silicon in the Mac lineup, with Apple having promised its first Apple Silicon machine would come before the end of the year. The “One more thing” tagline is a classic Apple reference from previous keynotes.”

The Apple Silicon is the new Apple processor. It was announced at WWDC earlier this year, stating the switch from Intel processors. The Silicon was said to be released sometime in 2020. This event should be it. You can watch it on Apple’s website next Tuesday.

iOS 14 Has a Bug

Apple announced their iOS 14 update back in June, and it was released on September 16th. However, it comes with an unexpected bug, according to users.

The bug apparently resets to default Apple apps when the device is restarted. CNET stated on their blog that Apple was fully aware of the bug, and plan on taking care of the issue in the next update.

So if you prefer using other apps, like your browser or mail, simply go into your settings, scroll down until you see the browser or mail app, and change which one you’d rather acquire as your default.

Apple’s Event Doesn’t Involve iPhone

Apple made a special announcement, sharing it’s September Event coming up.

September 15th, Apple will live stream their event on their website at 10 am PDT. Their main focuses are the Apple Watch and iPad. Back in July, Apple stated that they were not sharing the new iPhone until October.

On their blog, MacRumors suggests, “If there’s no ‌iPhone‌, we could also see other rumored products like the first Arm-based Mac (which is rumored to be a 13-inch MacBook Pro), over-ear “AirPods Studio” headphones, AirTags, and a smaller HomePod, all of which have been rumored for a fall launch.”

Mark your calendars!
