Troubleshooting Your Printer

Printers are a necessity in the workplace, whether you’re in a large company or a one-man business. And sometimes, printers work while other times, they don’t want to cooperate. It’s a hassle and stressful situation when you have to troubleshoot the issue because you’re unsure as to what happened. But it doesn’t have to be complicated so don’t throw that printer in the trash just yet.

Windows Troubleshooting

If your computer has Windows 10 version, Check that your printer is plugged into the power supply and turned on. Look at the wireless connection by going to the Start Menu and typing in “Printer”. A tab should open from your Settings and you will be able to see your printer information. Find and manage devices has a link below named Get help with your printer that can help you search the internet for device drivers. You can also download the printing troubleshooter and run through the steps to assist in determining and fixing the problem. If you have a wired printer, check your USB cable.

Printing Issues on Apple Devices

Some printers can be AirPrint-enabled so you can use your Apple Device to print things off. In this case, be sure your Mac or iOS device and printer are connected to the same WIFI network.

If you still can’t print (and sometimes this is the case), try restarting your router. Then turn your printer off and turn it back on again. It may also be the case that your printer is too far from the router, in which you find a closer spot.

Apple supports suggest after that, “if you’re using a Mac and you still can’t print, it might help to reset the printing system. Otherwise, contact the printer manufacturer for support.”

ARM and Intel Processors: What’s the Difference?

Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, announced at WWDC on June 22nd of 2020 that Apple planned on creating an ARM processor for their Macs. This two-year plan would allow time for developers to create a processor that would give Apple computers a boost in performance, along with better battery life, and overall better quality. Thus far, the company has used Intel processors.

Taking a look into ARM processors, it seems as though Intel is the better processor when implementing it in larger PCs. ARM processors focus more on power efficiency while Intel works harder on performance. A forum user on Quorm writes:

“While there are some ARM chips that are faster than low-end Intel chips, no current ARM design matches Intel’s top processor designs in terms of raw processing power (in terms of instructions per second). ARM’s current fastest design is comparable in performance with the Intel i5–7300U (a mid-range, mobile, “Kaby Lake”-generation processor introduced in early 2017), which is obviously slower than Intel’s current best performers.

However, exceeding Intel in performance is not ARM’s goal. They prize power efficiency above everything else, and so are willing to have lower overall performance if they get better performance per watt (which they have achieved).”

So while both Intel and ARM are processors, both have their uses in a PC, it was stated on Forbes that while Apple is currently in the works for a better quality ARM processor, Intel will continue to work with them to make the best possible computer. Apple will include both ARM and Intel processors, but Intel will be the supporting processor by 2022.

Benefits of Keeping your Computer Up to Date

Whether you have Windows, Apple, or any other kind of operating system, it’s extremely important to keep your computer up to date. There are a handful of benefits that safely secures any and all parts of it. Here are just a few of them:

Malware

Hackers are constantly on the move, doing anything possible to intrude in on personal computers to steal as much information as possible. Updates quickly add more protection to any personal information, such as passwords and banking credentials, to avoid any kind of viruses or malware.

Two-factor authentication is highly encouraged to keep PC’s safe. Microsoft Docs shared a statement for an upcoming update, saying, “Windows Defender System Guard enables an even higher level of System Management Mode (SMM) Firmware Protection that goes beyond checking the OS memory and secrets to additional resources like registers and IO.

With this improvement, the OS can detect a higher level of SMM compliance, enabling devices to be even more hardened against SMM exploits and vulnerabilities. This feature is forward-looking and currently requires new hardware available soon.”

Quick Fixes

Often times, smaller updates include a handful of fixes due to an improper update that could lead to issues like the blue screen of death. The Windows Community forum shares hundreds of issue inquiries that also adds simple fixes to alleviate flaws in the system.

Improvements

Software companies are always working on ways to improve users’ experience on their operating systems. These improvements lead to new features and updates to older applications. It helps to modernize the computer world on a constant basis.

Cortana has currently been updated to enhance experience, and it’s tightly secured so you have to log in to use it.

Delete Personal Information Properly When Selling Your Computer

This seems like a no-brainer when it comes to selling your computer, whether it be a PC or a Mac. No one wants any of their personal information compromised and fall into the hands of the wrong person.

But according to Kim Komando, a blogger named Josh Frantz spent roughly around $600 on different used devices for security research. What he found was absolutely startling.

“Frantz posted what he discovered on his rapid7 blog — and it was shocking! Of the 85 devices he bought, only two were correctly wiped. Most of the devices still had tons of information on them.

With help from a script he wrote, Frantz found 214,019 images, 148,903 emails and 3,406 documents. From all that, he was able to see email addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and credit card numbers.”

If you are ready to sell any device you have, make sure you use apps, such as Eraser, or Permanent Eraser to delete any and all information that could easily be stolen. You can also look up apps in the App Store to give you options of which disk eraser works best for you.

These devices aren’t limited to just computers. Phones, printers, tablets and other electronic devices acquire certain information that you would not want leaked. Take the appropriate steps to remove the goods, so the goods don’t become tainted when you sell your device.

Scan Documents Using Notes on iPhone

This is a pretty cool tip if you don’t have a printer with a scanner. If you have an iPhone, you can scan important documents using the Notes app.

All you have to do is go to the Notes App and click on the Camera icon on the bottom of the screen (it’s right in the middle). Once you’ve clicked on it, the option Scan Documents will be available for you to pick.

From there, you’ll just position the document and take a picture. You can drag the sides to match up to the paper. Then save the scan.

After all that is said and done, you can print off the document by hitting the Share button in the top right corner. Then scroll down the options until you find Print. What a handy feature on iPhones!

Clearing the Clipboard on your Mac

When you use your Mac, one of the numerous apps that runs in the background is the Clipboard. This is a very handy application when it comes to copy/paste. When you copy anything, macOS just remembers it and pastes it to your clipboard.

Thankfully, it only copies one thing at a time. Once you copy something else, the previous is erased immediately.

[T]he native clipboard application on Mac doesn’t allow you to keep multiple text copies in your memory at once. It only opens the last one, overwriting anything you might have copied earlier. Although managing a single entry, it can be difficult for some people to come to terms with the idea of a clipboard storing your search phrases.

It uses RAM, which may slow down your surfing performance on your Mac. Clearing the Clipboard frees up memory and protects personal or sensitive data.

The Quickest Eraser

While there are a handful of ways to clear the Clipboard by using commands, the easiest is simply restarting your Mac. Head to the top left of your screen and click on the Apple icon.

Scroll down and select “Restart” on the drop down menu. Make sure to save anything you were working on before restarting.

Special Apple Event

Codenamed “Unleashed”, Apple announced an upcoming event to share more information about the “M1X” processor.

According to 9to5Mac, “The new MacBook Pros are expected to feature a mini-LED display, an HDMI port, an SD card slot, MagSafe for charging, and much more.  Apple is also expected to ditch the controversial Touch Bar in favor of a traditional row of function keys. The design of the new MacBook Pros is expected to be similar to the latest iMac, iPhone, and iPad design language with flatter edges.”

It’s also rumored that Apple will publicize macOS Monterey’s release date.

The event will, once again, be virtual due to the pandemic. Everyone can tune in on October 18th at 10 am PST.

Ultimate Guide to Safeguard Your Computer

No computer is 100% secure from any and all viruses. However, you can take appropriate steps to protect it as much as possible. Developers from software giants, such as Microsoft and Apple, create applications to further safeguard devices.

Windows Security

We as Microsoft users understand the basic necessity of keeping our PC safe. Windows 10 includes a built-in app, called Windows Security to scan for viruses, along with firewall and network protection.

Passwords

Microsoft encourages users to go passwordless. Microsoft states, “this will strengthen your device sign-in by switching all Microsoft accounts on your device to modern multifactor authentication with Windows Hello Face, Fingerprint, or PIN, and eliminating passwords from Windows.”

Be sure to have the Microsoft Authenticator app installed and linked to your Microsoft account. Also, change your passwords about every three months.

Weak passwords are the entry point for the majority of attacks across enterprise and consumer accounts. There are a whopping 579 password attacks every second—that’s 18 billion every year.

Safe Browsing

Hackers have the capability of implementing malware from web browsers, not just operating systems.

Browsers, such as Google have been creating a safer environment on their platform. This includes their Chrome browser, Gmail, and the collab with Android.

An application system called “Safe Browsing” was developed by the team to ensure the protection of its users. When unknown sites or apps pop up, the system shows a warning message of the potential threat.
