Apple Diagnostic Tools Available

Apple offers a number of different operating systems. These include Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, and the planned Monterey edition, which debuted in 2021. By selecting the Apple Logo in the upper left corner of the screen, you can see which version of Mac OS X is currently operating on your Mac device. Once the drop-down option opens, choose About This Mac from the list, and a window with information will display.

Apple Diagnostics is the name of one of the computer diagnostic tools developed by Apple. If you believe that your Mac is experiencing a hardware problem, Apple Diagnostics can aid you in determining which hardware component is currently causing problems. It also supports you in contacting Apple Support and provides you with a variety of other solutions.

Disk Utility is a straightforward and useful program. Formatting, block accounting, volume bitmaps, and other issues may be checked quickly using this way of checking. Whenever an issue is detected, Disk Utility will make an attempt to resolve it on its own initiative. Disk Utility may be found by going to the Launchpad and searching for it. When the window appears, you’ll notice that the first tab is labeled “First Aid.”

Outdated Apps Getting the Boot

Apple recently shared an update on their App Store Improvements project.

This one shouts out to developers, stating if their applications are out of date, it will be removed from the App Store. The policy says that if your app hasn’t been updated in the last three years and doesn’t have a certain amount of downloads, you’ll receive an email notifying you that your software has been reported for removal from the App Store altogether.

However, developers are speaking out against it. According to MacRumors, “Many of the affected developers objected to Apple’s policy, noting that their apps continued to function just fine despite a lack of updates, highlighting the amount of work that might be needed to submit even a minor update, and pointing out that many apps can exist as finished works without a need for continual updates.”

Thankfully, Apple announced the deadline for app updates has been extended from 30 days to 90 days.

Check Out Time Machine on macOS

Time Machine is a tool on Macs that allows you to recover files if you accidentally delete them. Throughout the day, the function takes several photos of your macOS device.

Using this built-in backup feature, you can ensure that all of your personal data is safe and secure.

Time Machine automatically makes hourly backups for the past 24 hours, daily backups for the past month, and weekly backups for all previous months. The oldest backups are deleted when your backup disk is full. The first backup might take a long time, but you can continue using your Mac while a backup is underway. Time Machine backs up only the files that changed since the previous backup, so future backups will be faster.

Here’s how to access Time Machine:

  1. Go to System Preferences
  2. Search for Time Machine

If you haven’t updated iOS 15.4.1, do it now!

Following the release of iOS 15.4, Apple has fixed an issue that might cause the battery to deplete more abruptly than intended after switching to the latest version of the operating system.

It is completely free to download and install the iOS 15.4.1 and iPadOS 15.4.1 upgrades, and the software is automatically downloaded and installed on all compatible devices over-the-air through the Settings app.

In addition, the iOS upgrade featured a security patch for the operating system. iPhones may have been compromised because of a security flaw, according to reports.

Apple doesn’t give a lot of detail about what’s fixed in iOS 15.4.1, to allow as many iPhones as possible to be updated before more attackers can get hold of the details. According to Apple’s support page, iOS 15.4.1 patches a vulnerability in Apple AVD, which could allow an application to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges.

Universal Control on Mac

Apple’s operating system is getting a slew of new features, many of which were introduced at WWDC. One of which is Universal Control.

According to MacRumors, “Universal Control streamlines multi-device workspaces by allowing you to use the same peripherals across multiple Macs and iPads.

With Universal Control, you can use your main Mac’s trackpad and keyboard to control additional Macs and/or iPads nearby, so you don’t need a desk cluttered up with more than one set of input devices.”

It’s possible with Universal Control to use a single set of keyboard, trackpad, and mouse controls on a variety of Macs and iPads. You may now slide your mouse cursor off the edge of your Mac, and it will appear on the iPad when you set it adjacent to the computer. iPad keyboard and trackpad functions are identical to those on a Mac, and material may be transferred between both.

It’s best to note that this feature is still in the beta phase. This means if you would like to try it out, you’ll have to manually turn it on. Go to System Preferences ——> Displays ——-> Universal Control to access it.

Change Default Browser on Mac

Apple’s Safari is the default browser for browsing the web on macOS. Over recent years, however, users have been running into too many problems with Safari.

According to 9to5Mac, “By comparison, 10.38% of desktop users were surfing the web with Safari in January 2021, which suggests that Apple’s web browser has been losing ground to other alternatives. If Safari continues to lose users, it will probably slip to the third or fourth place in the ranking over the next few months.”

Thankfully, you can change your preference. Other browsers you can utilize include Chrome and Firefox. Because all of the frontrunners are free to download, the best thing to do is install them, test them out, and keep the one you like most. Then you may set it as your default browser.

Changing your default browser is super easy. Simply, go to System Preferences and select the General icon. From there, go to the dropdown menu next to Default web browser. You can choose whichever browser you’d rather use.

That’s it! Which browser do you prefer?

Warning for iOS 15.4

Apple released its iOS 15.4 update to its iPhone users. Unfortunately, this update came with a plethora of security issues.

It was stated that Apple has worked on fixing the 39 known security problems. Some of the issues included WebKit, which assists the Safari browser.

Forbes states on their website, “Even so, many of the issues fixed in iOS 15.4 are serious, which means you should update your iPhone now if possible. There are vulnerabilities that allow for Kernel level access, which is “about as bad as it gets,” says independent security researcher Sean Wright.”

Several of the flaws that Apple has recently addressed, such as the single but critical weakness repaired in iOS 15.3.1, were resolved after they had been exploited to attack iPhones. None of the vulnerabilities resolved in iOS 15.4 are currently being actively exploited, as noted in the Apple support page.

Using iPad as Second Monitor

Apple’s operating system incorporates a number of handy attributes throughout all of their devices. One in particular allows iPads to be used as a second monitor.

Named Sidecar, this feature has the ability to either act as a second monitor or a mirror. Be certain both your iPad and your Mac are on the same WIFI.

“If you’re using macOS Catalina, click the AirPlay icon  in the menu bar, then choose your iPad from the menu. (If you don’t see the AirPlay icon, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Displays, and select “Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available”.)”
