Hibernation Issues on Windows 10

Hibernation in Windows causes issues on some PCs. What should you do?

Simply hold down the power button until the machine shuts down entirely to restart it. Even if you turn off your laptop, it may not turn off. To turn it off in this situation, you must remove the battery. It will not function if it is linked to the wall.

If the problem persists after your computer has been restored to normal operation, you should disable hibernation. To access the power choices, go to the control panel and then to the power options. Change to “Never” in the “Hibernate” section, if it’s available. You may also use the standby mode.

If you don’t see the “Hibernate” option, you’ll find “Sleep” instead. Click on the Start Menu, select Power, and click the Sleep option.

All operating apps and documents are stored in RAM during standby, while they are stored on the hard drive during hibernation.

This [Sleep] uses very little power, your PC starts up faster, and you’re instantly back to where you left off. You don’t have to worry that you’ll lose your work because of your battery draining, because Windows automatically saves all your work and turns off the PC if the battery is too low. Use sleep when you’re going to be away from your PC for just a little while—like when you’re taking a coffee break.

Did you know? Hibernation mode consumes less battery power, but restarting the machine takes significantly longer.

What Happens When Your PC reboots Randomly

A computer shutting down or restarting can be caused by a variety of factors. The three most common are a faulty power supply, a bad motherboard, or a laptop that overheats.

Remember, If it’s merely shutting off, it’s most likely due to overheating.

Your power supply may run out at any time. All of your hardware components are powered by the electrical supply. It can simply switch off if things aren’t going smoothly. Replacing them is quite cheap.

The worst-case scenario, which is sadly the most prevalent, is motherboard failure. Random shutdowns, restarts, and Windows problems may result as a result of this. At home, there is no practical method to inspect the motherboard. It is the most difficult element to repair when it breaks. Unfortunately, everything else is tied to it.

Incompatible or outdated drivers might sometimes be the source of the problem. This is especially if it began after a recent update or upgrade. The most common reason of unexpected restarts is your graphics card driver. As a result, remove the graphics card driver and allow Windows to obtain the most compatible drivers.

This is Why Your Computer Slows Over time

Everything seemed to run smooth and quickly when you first received your computer. However, it appears to be slowing down with time.

Why is this the case?

There are several variables to consider, the most important of which being that consumer hardware degrades with time. Parts wear out, heat damage occurs, and so forth.

Examine your motherboard for blown caps, dust, and other debris. Sometimes a simple cleaning may make a huge difference. If your caps are blown, it’s time for a new motherboard.

It could possibly be low on memory, too many programs opened, or even malware. Nobody chooses to have viruses on their computer. Unfortunately, this occurs frequently. Malware may significantly reduce computer performance.

Virus and threat protection may be found in the Windows Security section of the Settings app. This checks your computer and notifies you if any action is required.

Software and hard disk corruption are two factors that might cause your computer to slow down over time. Another major reason is a lack of RAM and simply running out of hard drive space. When you don’t have enough RAM, your hard drive tries to compensate for the shortage of memory.

Ventilating Your Computer

Computers require ventilation and fans to ensure its hardware’s longevity. Overheated components can cause the PC to crash and fail. This could result in loss of data and personal information.

Dust Buildup

Over time, dust builds in computer cases and even laptops. This causes obstructing fans and restricting air movement. Unfortunately, trapping heat and preventing your PC from adequately cooling itself could cause even bigger problems. Clean your computer’s casing on a regular basis.

Now, if dust isn’t clogging it but it’s still overheating, the fan may not be working properly. It may need replaced, or it might have just come unplugged.

Another tip to remember is to keep the room clutter-free and cool. Make sure nothing is blocking the vents or fans. A warm environment could spell disaster for your computer. Humidity often becomes a culprit of PC issues.

Prolonged exposure to high humidity corrodes the components inside your computer, similar to the way damp air on a rainy day rusts metal left outdoors. When the computer’s metal and electronic pieces corrode, they can lose their conductivity, resulting in short circuits or complete computer failure. Computers should be kept in areas where the humidity level is around 45-50%. Keep them away from humidifiers and damp areas like bathrooms to prevent corrosion.

Temperature Changes

Like the inside, it’s best not to leave your device out in the sun. Doing so can also ruin the battery. Sources say to keep the temperature within 70-80 degrees. Apple says their devices include an automatic regulation, shown below:

iPhones come with a temperature sensor, so if the device overheats it sends a notification to the user. It immediately pauses any phone activity until the temperature drops.

Why Should You Back Up Your Computer

Your computer is an extension of you. It contains personal information, full of files and folders that are priceless. And it’s quite important to keep it safe and secure.

Unfortunately, files become lost or corrupted due to malware or hardware crashes. It’s times like these that you have to be extra careful.

Backing up your computer is the solution to these issues. Microsoft Support shares on their blog how to back up and restore your computer. They also state the importance of backing up on a separate hard drive.

“Do not back up files to the same hard disk that Windows is installed on. For example, do not back up files to a recovery partition. Always store media used for backups (external hard disks, DVDs, or CDs) in a secure place to prevent unauthorized people from having access to your files; a fireproof location separate from your computer is recommended. You might also consider encrypting the data on your backup.”

Windows 10 1709 Service Extension

First stated back in January that service on version 1709 of Windows 10 was to end in April of 2020, the release has now been extended. And with the pandemic still around, this helps many Microsoft users.

Microsoft Docs, which share important information on servicing their updates, lengthened their end of service for 1709 from April to October. According to their records, they say:

“Windows 10, version 1709 will reach the end of servicing on October 13, 2020 April 14, 2020. This applies to the following editions* of Windows 10 released in October of 2018:

  • Windows 10 Education, version 1709
  • Windows 10 Enterprise, version 1709
  • Windows 10 IoT Enterprise, version 1709

These editions will no longer receive security updates after October 13, 2020 April 14, 2020. Please go here for the latest information. Customers who contact Microsoft Support after this date will be directed to update their device to the latest version of Windows 10 to remain supported.”

This particular date also includes, “SharePoint Server 2010, SharePoint Foundation 2010, and Project Server 2010.” Version 1809’s end of service date was May 12th of 2020. However, the final update has been extended to November 10th.

CISA Urges Mozilla Users to Update Browser

The status shows critical

If you are a Mozilla user, be sure to make sure your browser is updated. The United States Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released a warning post on January 8th. This warning is not to be taken lightly. On their website, they state the following:

Mozilla has released security updates to address a vulnerability in Firefox, Firefox ESR, and Thunderbird. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to take control of an affected system. This vulnerability was detected in exploits in the wild.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) encourages users and administrators to review the Mozilla Security Advisories for Firefox 72.0.1 and Firefox ESR 68.4.1 and Thunderbird 68.4.1 and apply the necessary updates.

Mozilla knows about this recent attack, and is also encouraging users to update their browser, claiming the impact to be critical. According to Mozilla, critical means, ” Vulnerability can be used to run attacker code and install software, requiring no user interaction beyond normal browsing.”

On a Mac, simply launch Firefox and click About, then Firefox and click Restart to update Firefox.

On a PC, launch Firefox and go under either Options, then Firefox Updates.

Windows PC Warning – Attack Risk

Your Windows PC may be susceptible to an attack by hackers. If your PC Intel processor was made after 2012 and you haven’t updated your system, any personal information may be compromised. The attack can maneuver around security that is used to protect from Spectre and Meltdown exploits.

There was a July Patch this past Tuesday to fix the bug, and Windows and Intel are urging users to update their computers.

ZDNet blogs, “The bug has been called SWAPGSAttack because it exploits SWAPGS, an instruction for x86/x64 CPUs that switches the system to start addressing the protected memory set aside for operating system kernels. Attackers taking advantage of SWAPGSAttack [CVE-2019-1125] could use it to secretly monitor and steal sensitive information from a targeted machine – all without leaving a trace of an attack against the hardware.”

This bug was eventually found by BitDefender and shared their information to help fix the Tuesday’s Patch.

Scheduling Windows 2000’s Disk Defragmenter

Contrary to what you might have heard, NTFS partitions in Windows 2000 (Win2K) and Windows NT do fragment over time. The system doesn’t write files in contiguous areas on the hard disk. The larger the volume size, the more fragmented your hard disk is likely to become. As a result, it takes longer for the OS to access files and folders because it must perform extra disk reads to collect all the pieces. Even creating new files takes longer because the OS must locate free space scattered across the volume.

What Is Defragmentation?

Disk defragmentation is the process of reassembling files and folders in one location on a volume. The process, which works only on local volumes, consolidates files and folders in one contiguous place. Defragmentation results in improved disk access because it consolidates most—but not all—of the volume’s free space. The time it takes to defragment a volume depends on several factors, including the size of the volume, the amount of fragmentation, the number of files and folders, and the available system resources. In Win2K, you can defragment all three types of supported file systems: FAT, FAT 32, and NTFS.

The Win2K Disk Defragmenter

Win2K includes a limited version of Executive Software’s Disk Defragmenter. After logging on as an administrator, you can access the tool from Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter (you can’t execute the tool, dfrgntfs.exe, from the command prompt). The Disk Defragmenter console, which consists of two main areas: The upper area shows all the local volumes available on the disk, and the lower area shows how fragmented the highlighted volume is. The color legend at the bottom of the screen displays the fragmented, contiguous, and system files in red, blue, and green, respectively. The free space appears in white. The green areas, which appear only on NTFS volumes, represent the NTFS system files that you can’t move.

Defragmentation Analysis Reports

The analysis report gives you several pieces of useful information, including volume size, cluster size, and the amount of free and used space. You can also see information on volume, file, pagefile, directory (aka folder), and Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation. I find the average file size, listed under file fragmentation, particularly useful because it helps me determine an optimum cluster size for my volume. If the average file size is small, I’ll keep the cluster size small so I don’t waste disk space.

A good indication of fragmentation is the average fragments per file, listed under the report’s file fragmentation section. The optimum number is 1.00. If your fragments per file are 1.10, then about 10 percent of your files exist in two pieces. A value of 1.20 means 20 percent, and so on. If the fragments per file is 2.0, your files average two fragments each; 3.0 means three fragments each, and so on. The analysis report also shows you which files didn’t defragment. You can print or save the analysis reports in a text file.

The Defragmentation Process

It’s a good idea to analyze the volume before you start the defragmentation process. Doing so will not only let’s you determine whether you need defragmentation, but also lets you compare before and after pictures so that you can see the improvement. As I mentioned earlier, Disk Defragmenter doesn’t consolidate all the free space on a volume; it moves these areas of free space into one location. You can’t completely consolidate free space for several reasons: The pagefile is fragmented; NTFS reserves a portion of free space on NTFS partitions for the MFT; and partitions that contain many folders contribute to free space fragmentation. If the analysis report indicates that you need to defragment your volume, you can proceed with the defragmentation process. Screen 1 shows the analysis and the result of defragmentation in the graphical window on the bottom half of the console.

Defragmentation Tips

You can’t defragment certain system files, including the pagefile and the MFT, because they’re in use during normal Windows operations. One way to defragment a pagefile is to temporarily move it to a different volume. For example, to defragment the existing pagefile on your D: drive:

  1. Run the Disk Defragmenter tool to defrag the D: drive.
  2. Create a new pagefile on a different drive (e.g., the C: drive) and delete the one on the D: drive by setting its size to zero. Reboot your computer.
  3. Recreate the pagefile on the D: drive and delete the one on the C: drive by setting its size to zero.
  4. Reboot your computer one more time.

The system will create the new pagefile on the D: drive in a contiguous space, assuming you have enough contiguous disk space on the drive.

You should analyze your volume after deleting a large number of files or folders. For example, if you delete the I386 folder that contains Win2K source files or other large files such as video files, you should run Disk Defragmenter. You can only run one instance at a time. You should defragment file servers more often than desktop workstations because file servers frequently become fragmented.

Scheduling Disk Defragmenter

You should schedule file-server defragmentation during off-peak hours to minimize the effects on server performance. Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn’t provide an easy way to schedule disk defragmentation in Win2K. Because you can’t execute dfrgntfs.exe from a command prompt, you can’t use a batch file or task scheduler to schedule the process. However, Listing 1, which you can download from Article Info box at the top of this page, contains a Visual Basic (VB) script that runs the tool at scheduled intervals. You can modify the script, which I’ve named dfrgntfs.vbs, to fit your needs. It starts the defragmentation process and closes the window when it’s finished. Use the Scheduled Tasks tool, located in System Tools, to schedule this script. I’ve scheduled the script to run every Friday at 8:00 P.M. Make sure you select the Advanced tab to configure several additional options.
