Resetting Your Computer Without Losing Data

Resetting your PC might be useful for a variety of reasons. It is a smart alternative if you have frequent issues with its performance. If you’re experiencing problems with your computer’s software, a reset may be the best option.

If you’re seeking for a specific remedy for a specific problem, it may not always be effective or generate the desired results. Resetting your Windows 11 machine may be an option in this situation. It is possible to lose all of your data when you reset your computer. However, the truth is rather different. Here’s how to do it:

If you go to Settings —-> System —-> Recovery, troubleshooting can begin by clicking the ‘Fix problems without resetting this PC’ banner, which will open a new window. If you’ve done this and it didn’t work, go to Reset PC. Select “Keep my files” in the popup that appears. Click on “Remove everything” from the menu if you want a fresh start for your computer.

Hard Drive Failure Issues

Depending on the circumstances, the failure of a hard drive might have disastrous implications.

The procedure of replacing an old hard drive with a new one is straightforward; however, data stored on the old hard drive may get damaged or lost during the replacement process. In addition to using your current hard drive as a secondary disk after installing a new hard disk on your computer, you may connect your current hard drive to the computer using a USB cable.

The vast bulk of the information provided is that which is currently saved on the computer’s hard drive. Having restored your data, you will be able to remove the corrupt hard disk from your computer. Making frequent backups of your most important files and papers is one of the most efficient strategies of protecting your data.

In the case of a hard disk failure, Google Drive or other free cloud storage services are fantastic solutions for keeping data online that can be retrieved rapidly.

Notepad and Media Player Updated on Windows 11

Microsoft stated last month that it will begin bringing out an Android app compatibility and Taskbar upgrades to all Windows 11 users in February. They also included a refreshment of Notepad and Media Player.

At the heart of Media Player is a full-featured music library that allows you to quickly browse and play music, as well as create and manage playlists. All your content in the music and video folders on your PC will appear automatically in your library, and you can also tell Media Player where to look for additional content in app settings. Media Player is optimized for accessibility, with improved keyboard shortcuts and access keys for keyboard users as well as with other assistive technologies.

The Media Player app has taken the position of the Groove Music app. As a result, if your music collection is already in Groove Music, your library and playlists will be immediately migrated.

As far as Notepad, Microsoft states, “Menus have also been simplified to make it easier to find the actions you want to take in the app, and we’ve added new highly requested features like multi-level undo, colorful emojis, and a modern and efficient find-and-replace experience.” The revamped UI, or user interface, seems modern with a new design aspect from Windows 11.

If you would like to try out the new Notepad or Windows Media Player, just head over to the Microsoft Store and download them.

Windows 20H2 Needs to Update

Microsoft shared a reminder for users still utilizing Windows 10 version 20H2:

Windows 10, version 20H2 will reach the end of servicing on May 10, 2022. This applies to the following editions* of Windows 10 released in October of 2020:

  • Windows 10 Home, version 20H2
  • Windows 10 Pro, version 20H2
  • Windows 10 Pro Education, version 20H2
  • Windows 10 Pro for Workstations, version 20H2

These editions will no longer receive security updates after May 10, 2022. Customers who contact Microsoft Support after this date will be directed to update their device to the latest version of Windows 10 to remain supported.”

It appears that there must be a clear reason why customers should upgrade to Windows 10. However, it is pretty complicated.

People believe it is simply to obtain the top features and to upgrade the digital sector. And, although it is true, there is a lot more to it. Security is one of the biggest features of an operating system.

Outdated OS systems means that security flaws are more prevalent than ever. Because Microsoft releases security upgrades on a regular basis, the risks associated with upgrading to Windows 10 are minimal.

Routine Maintenance

Routine maintenance is crucial to a healthy PC.

Keep your computer up to date, whether you use Windows, Apple, or any other operating system. There are a few advantages that ensure the safety of any and all portions of it. This includes security and better performance.

It’s vital to understand that cleaning up your computer’s disk drives on a regular basis may help you free up a lot of disk space. There are a variety of approaches you can take.

The first step is to run an automated operation that cleans up your hard drive, which is fairly easy to perform. Simply choose the drive you wish to clean, right-click it, and choose properties from the menu. You’ll find “Disk Cleanup” as an option. Click on it to begin the process.

Remember, the more apps you have installed and the more documents, photos, photographs, music, videos, and toolbars you have saved on your computer, the slower it will get over time.

Back Up Hard Drive

Backing up your hard drive should be done often. If you’re working on a large project, you may do this every day to ensure the security of your data. Backing up your data preserves crucial files in the event of a hard disk failure or a system disaster.

A failing hard drive is one of the worst things that may happen to your computer because of all of the important documents, photographs, and other items saved on it. Backing up your computer is highly recommended by both Mac and Microsoft technical support, and it will significantly reduce your stress. It’s also really simple to accomplish! We share how to do that here.

New Task Manager Design

The Task Manager in Windows 11 is undergoing significant changes, including the addition of dark mode support. According to experts, the new design is built on top of the previous interface. In the final version, you might be able to restore the traditional appearance. The previous Task Manager’s tabs have been replaced with a sidebar, which allows you to navigate between the app’s many parts.

The new Task Manager follows the same approach as the existing app. For example, there are no changes to the process, performance and other tabs.

The tabbed approach that Task Manager currently uses seems just about right, but it appears that Microsoft is switching to a new design layout where process and other tabs will appear in the hamburger menu on the left side of the app.

This new menu will house options like Process, Performance, Services, and Settings.

The Task Manager is an important core feature of Windows that appeared with Windows NT 4.0. After being revamped in Windows 8, the application hasn’t seen any substantial modifications in almost a decade.

Understanding Backdoors and How They are Used

A backdoor is any technique that allows authorized or intruders to bypass typical security measures and gain high-level user access (also known as root access) to a computer system, network, or software application. Through a backdoor, criminals may steal personal and financial information, install other software, and control machines.

Backdoors can also be purposely placed by system or application developers as a means of gaining post-release access to their technology.

By using vulnerabilities in Webkit, the browser engine powering Safari, and XNU, the macOS and iOS kernel, a completely new macOS backdoor was sent to Hong Kong pro-democracy activists towards the end of 2021 via bogus and hacked websites.

On Tuesday, ESET researchers shared their knowledge about the attacks and the results of the analysis of that final malicious payload: a macOS backdoor with many capabilities, including collecting and exfiltrating system information, executing files, starting a remote screen session, dumping the contents of the victims’ iCloud Keychain, and more.

A good anti-malware program should be able to prevent hackers from installing the Trojans and rootkits required to open those pesky backdoors. You should also change your passwords on a regular basis and choose plugins and programs with prudence.

Why is Your Computer Overheating?

A computer that is overheating has the potential to permanently destroy its components. Laptops and PCs risk losing cooling from fans and other components because to their high computing power. Here are a few options for dealing with this problem:

Dust

When dust covers the fan or clogs the vents, it acts as insulation. Blocking the ventilation airflow across the computer might cause the CPU to overheat. Open up the computer casing and wipe it off thoroughly to get rid of the dust.

Where its at

Did you realize that the placement of your laptop or PC has an impact on how cool it stays? Keep it out of direct sunlight and heated environments. A cooling pad or a fan stand are also good investments.

Malfunctions

Normally, when you power on your computer, you will hear the fan turn on. If you don’t hear anything, it’s possible the fans have been shot. Overheating can melt components and cause your computer to fail. Karls Technology, a local repair service, can troubleshoot and offer you an accurate diagnostic. Handle Computer Viruses Properly

Computer viruses affect millions of computers each year, with 2018 ranking at over 800 million. In turn, this costed individuals and businesses billions of dollars in the process. This malicious software is created to access sensitive information, causing disastrous issues to your computer and allowing hackers to either collect or destroy data. In turn, this slows the computers functionality and operation or might even crash it all together, making it unusable.

The viruses can be spread through e-mail attachments, scam links, and pop-ups and often times seems legitimate. And while it’s extremely frustrating, you can take the necessary precautions of reducing your computers risk for a virus by avoiding clicking on any advertisements shown on web pages you might visit.

You can also download anti-virus software, which can detect and remove harmful trojans or malware, and is beneficial to have even if you’re not concerned about a potential threat. Norton and McAfee are well known anti-virus software subscriptions, available for you to purchase online. Keeping your OS updated to the latest version is helpful as well, as it contains the protection and security needed.

Trust your gut – if it seems fishy, it probably is!

The Blue Screen of Death

The Blue Screen of Death, or BSOD for short, is a detrimental error due to flawed hardware or crashing software on a Microsoft Windows computer. And it shows up on your monitor as a – yep, you guessed it – blue screen. Too often, users have no knowledge of why or how this happens or what to do next. But there are ways to troubleshoot this specific problem.

Restarting

Depending on which version of Windows you have currently installed on your computer will determine what form of error information will show up. Windows 8 and 10’s is less complicated than 7 and under, which include a handful of steps to handle the situation. Windows OS has a default restart automatically setting in the case of a system failure.

If you’d rather it not restart, follow these steps to do so:

  1. Control Panel —–System and Security
  2. Click on System
  3. Go to Advanced System Settings
  4. Advanced Tab —–Startup and Recovery
  5. Click on Settings

From there, you’ll see the System Failure block. The “Automatically Restart” box is checked. Disable it by simply un-checking the box. You’ll also notice the Dump File, which contains information about the crash to identify, and possibly fix the issue. When your computer restarts, Windows 8 and 10 will perform a troubleshooting step automatically after a BSOD. This step will inspect your computer’s unresolved problems for results. You can also observe this option in the Action Center of your Control Panel and run a test to look out for available fixes.

Search Online

When you get a BSOD, there may also be a code shown for you to search on the web to get information for that specific error. This can be a quick and easy way to troubleshoot your computer and get it fixed right away.
