Why is Your Computer Overheating?

A computer that is overheating has the potential to permanently destroy its components. Laptops and PCs risk losing cooling from fans and other components because to their high computing power. Here are a few options for dealing with this problem:

Dust

When dust covers the fan or clogs the vents, it acts as insulation. Blocking the ventilation airflow across the computer might cause the CPU to overheat. Open up the computer casing and wipe it off thoroughly to get rid of the dust.

Where its at

Did you realize that the placement of your laptop or PC has an impact on how cool it stays? Keep it out of direct sunlight and heated environments. A cooling pad or a fan stand are also good investments.

Malfunctions

Normally, when you power on your computer, you will hear the fan turn on. If you don’t hear anything, it’s possible the fans have been shot. Overheating can melt components and cause your computer to fail. Karls Technology, a local repair service, can troubleshoot and offer you an accurate diagnostic. What if a Website Doesn’t Load?

Sometimes, the internet can be a frustrating thing to deal with, especially if the website doesn’t load. You may be welcomed with a “The connection has timed out” or 404 error will pop up. Or, you might find the black and white dinosaur mini game, while it reads “No internet”.

This can be confusing, as you think everything on your end should be working properly. Thankfully, there are a few ways you can troubleshoot this issue.

Turn it off, then on again

Computer techs are often quick to ask, “have you tried turning it off, then back on again?” And while that can be annoying, these techs swear by it. When computer issues arise, something as easy as shutting down your PC for a short time, then turning it back on alleviates the problem.

Add-Ons may be stopping a loading page

Certain browser add-ons you may hinder the loading process of a website. These can vary anywhere from anti-virus extensions to incorrect configurations. Try a different browser to see if you’re acquiring the same results. Also, a word of caution, if the extensions are causing the webpage to fail at loading, there may be a good reason for it. Often times, you can trust your add-ons to determine which websites are safe and which are not.

Try a ‘website down’ checker

Websites, such as “Is It Down Right Now?” will help double-check if you’re the only one experiencing loading problems. All you have to do is type in the URL and search. Within seconds, the results will show if anyone else is having trouble on that website as well.

Check a different device

It’s quite possible that the device you’re surfing the web on is having some technical difficulties. To test this, try using the browser on a different device and see if the same results appear.

PGMag states on their blog, “try visiting the site on another device, like your phone (connected to the same Wi-Fi network). If the site loads on your phone but not your computer, you can narrow down the problem to your PC. If the site doesn’t load on your phone when connected to Wi-Fi but loads when Wi-Fi is off, you’ll need to start digging around in your router’s settings—it’s possible the built-in security software, parental controls, firewall, or some other option is blocking your access.”

Stating the obvious

There are also options on the problematic webpage, which states:

  • checking the internet connection
  • checking the firewall and proxy
  • Run the Windows Network Diagnostic

These options give links, which will send you to the proper destination to run any diagnostics or check any connections.

What does Out-of-Band Update mean?

Earlier this week, the software giant delivered a rare out-of-band update for Windows 11, Windows 10, and select versions of Windows Server. The update tackles difficulties with utilizing particular VPN connections, and on Windows Server, it repairs the mistakes that might have impaired the performance of the servers.

What does an out-of-band update mean, though?

Simply put, an out-of-band patch is an update issued at a time other than the normal release schedule. A patch, commonly dubbed a “fix,” is a quick-repair operation for a piece of software.

Microsoft is releasing Out-of-band (OOB) updates today, January 17, 2022, for some versions of Windows. This update addresses issues related to VPN connectivityWindows Server Domain Controllers restartingVirtual Machines start failures, and ReFS-formatted removable media failing to mount. All updates are available on the Microsoft Update Catalog, and some are also available on Windows Update as an optional update. Check the release notes for your version of Windows for more information.

Updates for the following Windows versions are available via Windows Update as an optional update. Go to Settings to see if your operating system includes it.

What Are Computer Cookies?

Computer cookies, simply put, is stored data on internet browsers. When users surf the web, each site visited sends cookie files back to their browser.

This could end up being a good thing, or a nuisance.

For example, cookies store information, such as login credentials to user accounts. This can be quite the perk, considering another login won’t have to be remembered. However, if the user delete the cookies, it will erase any files or data connecting to all websites visited.

What’s the Reasoning Behind Cookies?

Companies use cookies on their website to gather a variety of information. Norton, a cyber-security company, includes a Privacy and Cookie Policy on their site, which says:

“We and our partners use cookies on this site to improve the efficiency of the navigation, perform analytics, serve more relevant advertising content to you and measure advertising performance, provide social media features, remember website preferences, and generally improve the user experience. By clicking on “Yes I agree”, you consent to these cookies. For more information on cookies, including how to manage your consent, please click on “Settings” to access our Cookie tool.”

While for the most part, cookie files are innocent, users may not want their privacy compromised on their computer. Browsing patterns can be detected due to the cookies. Thankfully, websites usually request permission to use cookies, and you can deny it.

How to Delete Cookies

In your browser settings, you will find the clear browser data. With Google Chrome, click on the three dots on the top right corner of the browser. From there, scroll to More tools and a second list will show up. Click the Clear browser data option. Afterwards, a pop-up occurs, like the one below:

You can now clear whatever history, data, or files you’d prefer within certain time ranges. Incognito mode, a private browsing option, is a useful tool for those who would prefer only little information collected. And that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

Hackers in VPN’s

When it comes to security, VPN’s are of extreme importance. Virtual Private Networks, or VPN, keep data strictly secure between the internet and devices. It’s set up to lock down to keep any communication safe and protected.

However, cybercriminals are finding ways to weed their way into VPN’s to release malicious malware or viruses. They’re tricking users to install certain VPN’s with a package that allows hackers to sneak in and receive all of the information they need.

Just recently, Tech Radar shared an addressed issue from Trend Micro, stating, “the bundled application drops three components on a user’s system: the legitimate VPN installer, the malicious file (named Iscm.exe) that contains the backdoor and the application that serves as the runner of the malicious file (win.vbs).”

Backdoors are specifically designed to assist hackers to infiltrate the VPN without being noticed. This helps them take screenshots, install malicious data, and steal information.

It’s important to remember not to install any VPN’s without knowing for sure if the installer is completely legitimate. Always ask questions, when in doubt. If you don’t, it’s possible that the secured network will be compromised. This is a huge red flag for business VPN’s.
